Early History:
Sam grows up in the small fishing town Delacroix, Louisiana, with his parents (Paul & Darlene), sister (Sarah) as well as an unnamed aunt, grandparents and great-grandparents, working on his family's fishing boat and seafood business alongside his sister. He loses his great-grandparents, grandparents and mother during unknown points in his childhood. After High School, he works for the family business with his father to help support the family. When his father dies, Sam leaves the familybusiness in his sister's hands and joins the Air Force as a pararescueman, serving two combat tours in Afghanistan, becoming a test pilot for the EXO Falcon project, successfully flying in infamous and highly classified missions alongside his wingman, Riley. During a night mission, Riley is hit by an RPG. Sam is unable to save him, which profoundly shakes his life, leaving him unable to find a reason to continue fighting. He leaves the Air Force. Instead of staying wtih his family, Sam refocuses his life around further helping others by becoming a counsellor for veterans with PTSD in Washington, DC.
The Falcon:
In 2014, Sam encounters Steve Rogers, eventually joining him after HYDRA takes over SHIELD, realizing the stakes of what they're up against and the threat to the world at large this poses, reclaiming the EXO-7 FALCON suit. Once committed back to the fight, Sam is there to stay even after the threat is handled, agreeing to search for Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier, once he's broken out of his brainwashing and goes into hiding.
This secret mission alongside his recruitment into the Avengers in 2015 and subsequent missions with them, keeps him busy until 2016, when the government introduces the Sokovia Accords, a document meant to control the Avengers under government oversight. Sam is the first to vocally oppose this, not trusting the idea that any government should be allowed to dictate where and how they act, as it would subject them to other people's agendas. When Bucky is framed for a bombing and his Winter Soldier programming temporarily reactivated, Sam fights to defend him, violating the Accords and becoming an enemy of the government. He's temporarily imprisoned, but broken out by Steve and Natasha, going into hiding as a wanted fugitive with them for the next two years.
When Thanos attacks Earth in 2018, they join the fight to defend Earth. As a result of Thanos using the Infinity Stones, half of all life in the universe is eradicated, including Sam. He's returned to life 5 years later. Steve passes the shield and title of Captain America to Sam.
Captain America:
In the following 6 months, Sam does contract work for the Air Force as the Falcon, initially rejecting the shield and giving it to a museum to be laid to rest. When new super-soldiers arrive and the shield is given to another white man, Sam has to walk a tightrope between a country's legacy of failing black people, his own need to do the right thing, and what kind of fight he needs to be fighting, culminating in him reclaiming the shield and choosing to become a different kind of symbol with it - a black man with no super powers other than the belief that we can all do better.

Personality
Compassion, Empathy, Helping Others:
Core traits of Sam's personality are perhaps best summed up in the pararescuemen motto: "These Things We Do, That Others May Live". Sam is a man dedicated to helping others and doing what he believes to be right. Sam is ready to extend a helping hand, empathy and understanding - sometimes even to those who oppose him and seek to do him harm, willing to hear others out and stick up for the little people, the disenfranchised, the ones left behind by the world. He's ready and willing to put himself in harm's way for the right people - this can included opponents.
Unwavering Moral Code, Wary of Authority:
If he sees something done that he considers wrong, he will speak up about it, make his stance known and act if he is able to act. This refusal to stand idly by in the face of injustice or people in need can lead to Sam putting himself in harm's way and put him in conflict with authority figures, whom he does not blindly follow. This wariness of authority figures can of course easily become detrimental to Sam himself. If in doubt, he refuses to take the easy way out, and maintains a solid balance of conviction that never tips too far into cynicism or optimism. While he can be swayed, he will ultimately stay true to himself.
Unflinchingly Loyal, Stubborn:
His loyalty isn't the easiest to gain, but it's incredibly hard to lose. Sam doesn't give up on people easily, and can be incredibly stubborn in his convictions.
Level-Headed with a Sense of Humour:
Sam is able to remain level-headed and firm without portraying the full extent of the anger or hurt he might feel, often willing to diffuse a situation with humorous remarks, teasing and bantering for other's sake over raising his own voice. True anger leads to him shutting others out more than it does to him raising his voice.
Open but not Opening Up:
While being open towards others, Sam rarely if ever opens up about his own feelings, trauma and needs. Even close friends are left in the dark about much of his inner life. Patient with others far beyond what many would put up with if he considers a person worth it, Sam can and will be hurt by others, letting them close but ever kept at arm's length without getting pushed away - and often without noticing that's what he's doing.

Abilities & Skills
Pararescue:
Sam has received the nearly two year gruelling Air Force PJ Training, also known as "Superman School" that includes training from multiple military branches and is designed to cover a wide range of special ops and rescue skills. Pararescuemen are combat medics that are dispatched into the field to rescue injured soldiers in a wide variets of situations. The training includes the following courses according to the US Air Force: Basic Military Trainig, Special warfare Preparatory, Assessment and Selection Course, Special Warfare Pre-Dive and Combat Dive Course, Airborne School (Parachuting), Military Free-Fall Course, SERE Training (Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape), various Paramedic/EMT courses.
Paramedic/Combat Medic:
As part of his pararescue training, Sam is able to provide on-site emergency medical care.
Flight/Pilot:
Outside of his parachute/skydiving training, Sam is shown competently handling aircraft familiar to him. Most of his flight prowess is depicted with the EXO-7 FALCON wingsuit and follow-up models, however, a combination wingsuit and thruster pack that keeps its pilot airborn. Sam is extremely fast and agile with this. Canonically, the EXO-7 was still a prototype, with only Sam Wilson and his wingman Riley piloting the suits, implying they'd been testing the FALCON suits mark 1 through 6 as well. later, Stark Industries would improve on the prototype design, and at his current canon point, Sam as Captain America has instead received a new take on the suit as designed by Wakandan technicians.
Martial Arts/Acrobatics:
As part of his unique training and later combat outings as the Falcon and becoming Captain America, Sam has developed a unique fighting style. Trained in aerial and unarmed combat, his style includes a combination of firearm improvisation, flight maneuvers and modern army combat styles that are influenced by elements from Muay Thai, American Boxing and Taekwondo, relying on fast and acrobatic maneuvers over brute strength, often employing kicks boosted by momentum and his thrusters over punches. Additionally, in order to handle the shifting equilibrium of his fast flight speeds, Sam trains hard to be nimble and acrobatic. In addition to regular runs, we see his training including flips to keep his body in constant, fast motion.
Marksman:
While mostly seen using the retractable sidearms of his former Falcon suit, Sam has been shown using a variety of firearms with skill and accuracy, as befits his military training. Additionally, he's trained to use the vibranium shield offensively as well as defensively, throwing it with great skill and accuracy.
Engineering:
Sam performs maintenance and calibrations both on his wingsuit as well as his drone in between missions, not trusting specialised professionals over his own skills. He's also seen doing repairs on his family's boat.
Languages:
Sam speaks English and Arabic.
Fishing/Cooking:
Sam has spent his childhood and youth working on a fishing boat and for his parents' seafood business. He has reasonable skill at fishing and handling fishing related tools, can be seen fixing nets, is comfortable on boats, and has a good grasp of cooking especially surrounding seafood.

Content Warnings
Racism:As of "Falcon and the Winter Soldier", the MCU has started acknowledging systemic racism and how it affects not only black people in general, but black superheroes in particular. Sam's not gonna go off on lectures, but the narrative can possibly includes nods where appropriate and tied into themes from Sam's backstory.
PTSD/Trauma:
Sam is a war veteran who has suffered his fair share of trauma and loss. While he tends to front being fine, his narrative might nod to some of those experience. He's unlikely to bring them up, unless it is to express empathy and understand for what someone else is going through.
Grief:
Much like his PTSD and trauma, Sam mostly deals with his grief over people he's lost quietly. But he has lost his grandparents, aunt, parents, brother-in-law, and a variety of close friends and partners, which the narrative might reference, and which he might mention in dialogue when appropriate.
Headcanons
Headcanons are canon compliant and framed to have no impact on cast mates in games. Mostly they inform how the character is played rather than becoming constant talking points. If ongoing canon reveals information that contradicts the information listed here, the headcanons will be updated/adjusted accordingly.
Family:
Known family members: Parents (Paul and Darlene), sister (Sarah), two nephews (Cass, AJ) and unnamed aunt, unnamed grandparents and great-parents, unnamed brother-in-law. All but his sister and nephews are deceased at his canon point. His sister Sarah is three years younger than Sam. Because of the blip she's now technically two years older.
Sam does not go to college after high school because he prioritizes helping his family, and they can't afford a degree for him anyway. Canonically the family business is struggling to survive. He works for Wilson Family Seafood for three years to allow Sarah to focus on graduating High School with good grades, but the family business was always gonna be hers to inherit - she has a passion for it that he doesn't, for him the connection is more sentimental than fulfilling. When their father dies in a car accident, Sarah steps up in the business after her graduation, and Sam enlists with the Air Force.
Sam's great-grandparents died when he was barely more than a toddler, his grandparents when he was in elementary school and his mother when he was a young teen. His mother dies of cancer. His father dies in a car accident when Sam is 21.
Sam's aunt (his tt) is especially close to Sarah, and Sam loves her for how much she's there for his sister during his combat tours. She dies after he leaves the Air Force.
Sam's first nephew, Cass, is born around the time Sam meets Steve Rogers. Sam lives and works in DC, and then in NYC as an Avenger, but he makes time to see his sister, brother-in-law and nephew as often as he can despite his busy schedule and often international missions. Sam's second nephew, AJ, is born around the time Sam becomes a fugitive and goes on the run with Steve and Natasha. Sam never met him. When Sam returns to life after the Blip, not having seen his family in 7 years, Cass has little memory of him, and AJ has none due to how young they were when he had to disappear and when he died.
Sam's bother-in-law dies sometime in between Sam becoming a fugitive and Sam's death.
Riley:
Sam and Riley meet during PJ training, and become inseperable. This means by the time Riley dies, Sam and him have known each other for 9 years.
During the prototype test phase for the EXO Falcon wingsuits, Sam strongarms his way into always being the first to test a new model. Riley initially assumes Sam wants to push his military career ahead by doing this, but figures out pretty fast that it's because the prototypes have a tendency to malfunction, and Sam is protecting Riley from getting hurt.
Because Sam is the primary test pilot for the prototypes and the finalized EXO-7 Falcon suit, "Falcon" becomes Sam's callsign. Because of Riley's strawberry blonde hair and penchant for bad sunburns, Sam decrees his callsign as "Redwing". This is why he later names his Stark Tech Recon/Combat Drone Redwing - that way, his partner is still up in the sky with Sam, helping him get the job done.
Riley was Sam's partner, wingman, best friend and lover. The latter is a fact Sam never shared with anyone. Don't ask don't tell was still in effect while they were both in the Air Force. Sam thought he was going to spend the rest of his life with Riley. He never told Sarah, but she knows.
When Riley dies, Sam is the one who has to review the suit's uploaded data over and over again for the debriefing, as he's the only other EXO-7 pilot, and his insight into the circumstances of Riley's death is invaluable.
Sam hates the word classified - because that was slapped all over Riley's files. The EXO-7 Falcon project was highly classified, and therefore Riley's family never learned the full truth of how their son died. It was declared a standard training accident.
There wasn't enough of Riley left to be sent home, so the family received an urn. Sam doesn't know what exactly happened to it, if it was buried or sits on a mantlepiece somewhere - he never met Riley's family, same as he was never able to introduce Riley to his own family. They wanted to do all that and more after returning home from their second combat tour.
Other:
Sam is a good cook. He holds no candle to his sister, but he's more than competent in the kitchen, especially with southern comfort food and seafood.
Sam is male leaning bisexual with some leanings towards demisexual. He's careful with his affections. Casual flirtations are easy, but he doesn't tend to date a lot or sleep around, and hasn't seen anyone since Riley's death - too busy mourning, studying, working, and then being an Avenger, and then being a fugitive, and then being dead. He's technically out, but since he doesn't date that much, this is just not something that tends to come up a lot. Sam also considers his sexuality about the least interesting part of himself.
Sam loves flying above all else in life, and despite the trauma and PTSD associated with his combat tours on the EXO-7 Falcon wings, he's never quite as happy as when he's in the air.
Sam may be a tall, very muscular and strong man, but since he flies through the air with nothing but a winged jetpack on his back, he needs to have excellent control over his body. Among other things, Sam took some modern dance and acrobatics classes to achieve the necessary levels of speed and agility.
Sam received some standard regulation military therapy, which was never designed to help him adapt to becoming a civilian. He learned to cope by throwing himself into his bachelor's degree in counseling. He still has the number of a more highly qualified VA counselor in his phone, having always intended to seek actual therapy and counseling for himself, but never made the call.
Sam hates when people make joking comparisons between him and Icarus. After all, it was Riley who fell to the desert sands in charred pieces. Sam is the one who survives, filling the deep trenches of his grief with love until they're dug up all over again over his next loss. This doesn't stop him from loving every single damn person he lets into his life as fiercely and deeply as he can.
